Here I am stood
confused and trapped
in uncomfortable clothing
that would never
make into my wardrobe;

I’d chuck it out
far before it got a hanger
it’s a heavyset weighing me down
my soul begging for a release;

It’s just not me
maybe it’ll suit another better
perhaps light for them
this soul being crushed underneath
screaming to take off this costume;

Years it’s been
I’ve forced this on, it doesn’t fit
why am I still doing this?
my wings are trapped inside
because this is a costume, not a skin;

One day I’ll step free
wash away this makeup leaving bruises
piece by piece, remove the costume
my wings will be released
flying my broken body will sing;

This body may be pained
a war may be continuing inside
but the soul, the heart, the spirit
carries my owner through the agony
because it’s worth being them;

The light will touch skin
finally free of all the makeup & clothing
it’ll burn sometimes
yet a blue, green earth will come
to understand the beauty;

After all how can someone say
honesty is ugly & love isn’t the answer
walking away from reality
forcing each being in a musty box
says lying is beauty & hate answers all;

We each are born with wings
they’re invisible but they’re there
often trapped beneath
fracturing clothing & damaging makeup
there must be a better way to live
